Clothing and Equipment for the NorthEast Face of Notchtop

This is the clothing and equipment I took with me for a climb of the North East face of Notchtop Mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park.  The climb involves a hike in of a couple of hours, scrambling up class 4 rock to approach the face, followed by several pitches of water ice climbing interspersed with snow benches.

This climb was in November, 2007

Clothing:

Lightweight Dryflo top  (basic wicking base layer)

Mountain transition pullover  (this is a versatile windshirt made from a highly breathable goretex fabric.  Not as light as some of the ultralight windshirts, but completely windproof.)

MEC powershield softshell jacket  (good, basic softshell jacket made from Malden Mills powershield fabric.)

MEC Belay jacket  (big, puffy, warm primaloft jacket with a Gore dryloft shell. Cozy, but heavy)

Woolpower bottoms   (heavy weight merino wool base layer)

Cloudwalker Ama Dablam soft shell farmer john bibs (Schoeller WB400 waterproof softshell bibs)

Powerstretch headband  (home made wide headband constructed from lightweight powerstretch fabric)

Cloudveil "four shadows" hat  (softshell hat)

HB Dyneema Helmet  (ultra light, ultra strong)

Smartwool mountaineering socks  (warm, comfortable)

Scarpa “Assault” boots (tried and true classic leather mountain boots)

Mammut short gaiters.

Granite Gear Ice Sparring gloves (warm and dextrous)

Cloudveil iceflow gloves (not as warm, but even more dextrous)

Personal Gear:

McHale climbing pack  (light and simple)

Cebe "Checinal" sunglasses (removable side shields come off too easily when taking these sunglasses on and off.)

Uvex pocket goggles (small and compact)

Camelback 3 liter bladder with drinking tube (contains sports drink)

Mammut Lucido TX1 Headlamp (my new favorite headlamp.  Amazing spotlight.  Saved us lots of time on the descent.)

Suunto Vector altimeter watch (worn around neck)

Leatherman squirt tool  (tiny and light multi-tool)

Climbing Food (15 GU packs, 3 cliff bars, 3 meat sticks)

Nikon 28ti camera, film  (Highest quality point and shoot film camera ever made)

Toilet paper

Sunscreen

First aid kit  (contents on my Accessories page)

Personal Climbing Equipment:

BD Cobra tools with extra pick and wrench (heavier than the carbon fiber Black Prophets, but better for steep water ice)

Cassin Eolo  Harness (8.5 ounces)

Black Diamond Tool Holsters

BD ATC Guide Belay device

Locking belay biner

M10 Crampons with antiballing plate (This route's technical pitches were all water ice, and these are great water ice crampons.)

Metolius Gear Sling

Group Climbing Gear:

Beal Stinger 9.4 mm Rope

3 pitons

7 ice screws
