I have a number of Luis Royo’s books, and had admired this painting for a long time. It was published as a two page spread in his book, Malific. The painting was done in 1992, and I had no doubt that the original had long since been purchased by a collector. When I saw it was still available from the artist, I bought it immediately. I love the traditional fairy-tale fantasy tone of this painting. To me, this work really captures some of the best elements of Royo's style, and I prefer this setting to the demonic, apocalyptic, or pin-up themes of many of his other paintings.
